Close
The magnificent Liugui Buddha, 24-meter tall and weighing 167 tons, stands in the Xinkai Tribe of Liugui District, Kaohsiug. The statue is backed by the meandering Central Mountain Ridge while it faces the graceful Laonong Stream. Such beautiful nature enhances a compassionate and serene atmosphere. At the entrance of the “worship route” is a hand sculpture as large as Liugui Buddha's. Many believers like to take pictures with the big hand. Walking up the “nine-dragon” stone steps, one shall reach the Qing-style altar and find a series of sculptures that explain Buddha's enlightenment. Visitors may eventually go inside the statue from its bottom to see its steel structure and a seven-ton emerald stone which symbolizes mountain protection. In the hallway behind the statue are 12 zodiac Arhats. Visitors are free to make wishes from the Arhat they belong to, according to their own zodiac year.

The Liugui Buddha once saved a village below it during Typhoon Morakot in 2009, by keeping the sliding mud and rocks away. This is just one of the many miracles it has brought to local people.
